Dashboard / Season

Pick a spot by season

The month matters more than most swimmers expect. Each month below ranks every published spot by its mean water temperature that month; open one to see the ordering and what the water is doing. The pooled annual envelope across the whole library is at the foot of this page.

Across all 21 published records, the month with the highest mean water temperature is August.

The band is the coldest-to-warmest spread across every documented spot; the heavy line is the mean. At sea sites the summer peak lags the solstice by six to eight weeks.

Before you get in

Cold water is the one hazard that applies everywhere in this library. Below 15 °C the gasp reflex can make you inhale water involuntarily within seconds of immersion; below 10 °C, unacclimatised swimmers lose the ability to swim effectively within minutes. Enter gradually, keep your first session under five minutes, never swim alone, and get out while you still feel fine — the afterdrop continues after you leave the water.
