Safety safety

Guangdong's marine monitoring lists Dongchong as one of the better swimming areas on the Shenzhen coast, generally meeting Class Ⅱ of the national sea-water standard in summer. Avoid swimming in the 48 hours after heavy rain, when urban run-off from the peninsula raises bacterial counts.

Safety notes (3)
  • The South China Sea has strong tidal currents around the headlands. Swim inside the netted zone; the currents at the headland tips run at over 1 m/s on a spring tide.
  • Jellyfish are present from June to September. The beach posts a warning flag when they are sighted; the sting of the local box jellyfish relative is painful but rarely dangerous.
  • Typhoon season runs July to September. Beaches close when the observatory hoists typhoon signal 3 or above — do not enter the water under a closure.

Where to get in

  • Sandy beach — Main beach; 25 m of shallow water before swimming depth, with a netted swim zone in summer.
  • Reef edge (advanced) — 200 m offshore beyond the swim zone; the reef is the snorkelling attraction but lies outside the netted area and has no lifeguard cover.

On site

  • Showers, changing rooms and gear rental at the beach entrance
  • Lifeguards and a netted swim zone, May–October
  • Seafood restaurants and guesthouses in Dongchong village, 600 m

Getting there

From Shenzhen city centre it is about 70 km east on the Yantian–Dapeng expressway, roughly 90 minutes. In summer, vehicles entering the Dapeng Peninsula at weekends need an advance reservation through the official booking system.

Public transport: metro to Yantian then bus M471 to Dongchong, about 2 hours 30 minutes total. The beach is 6 minutes' walk from the village stop.

Getting in

Walk in from the sand. With 25 m of shallow water you can wade to chest depth, and the netted swim zone extends about 150 m offshore within the 1–3 m depth band.

August water is 29 °C — the warmest on this list and comfortable for a two-hour swim. This is also the only site here where you can swim comfortably after dark, which many visitors do in the summer heat.

Getting out

Walk out on the sand. The beach is gently sloped, though there are small rocks in the last two metres at the north end.

Use the showers at the entrance — the South China Sea is warm enough that people stay in for hours, and the salt and sun combination burns faster than most expect.

Depth profile

A shallow sandy bay sheltered by two headlands: 1.5 m at 25 m out, 3 m at 60 m, and a maximum of about 9 m in the channel between the beach and the outer reef. A subtidal rock reef lies 200 m offshore, which is why the bay holds the clearest water on the Shenzhen coast.

Season window

May to November; the sea stays above 23 °C into November

Cold-water questions

How warm is the sea at Dongchong?
29 °C in July and August, and still above 23 °C in November — the warmest and longest swimming season of any site on this list.
Do I need a reservation to visit Dongchong beach?
Vehicles entering the Dapeng Peninsula on summer weekends and public holidays need an advance booking; the beach itself has no entry charge. Buses are exempt.

Before you get in

Cold water is the one hazard that applies everywhere in this library. Below 15 °C the gasp reflex can make you inhale water involuntarily within seconds of immersion; below 10 °C, unacclimatised swimmers lose the ability to swim effectively within minutes. Enter gradually, keep your first session under five minutes, never swim alone, and get out while you still feel fine — the afterdrop continues after you leave the water.

Informational only. Stillwater is not a safety authority, a lifeguard service or a medical source, and nothing here is professional advice. Water conditions change within hours: temperatures are monthly means, not today's reading, and depth profiles are typical rather than surveyed. Before you enter any water, check the current conditions, read the on-site signage, follow the advice of local lifeguards above anything on this page, and if you are unsure of your ability in cold water, do not go in.
